Joanne Fletcher
Recipient of the 2010 Johnson and Johnson Award
For Excellence in Dental Hygiene
  Joanne Fletcher has been a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association for 50 years. She has served the dental hygiene community through the component, constituent and national levels. For the Bridgeport DHA, Joanne has served as a delegate to the CDHA, Chairman of BDHA Delegation, a Component Trustee, Speakers Chairman and Lecturer. She is one of the three founding members of the Greater Collin County DHS, where she remains a trustee. She has been a part of Sigma Phi Alpha as a Lecturer, Secretary and Treasurer. She fulfilled the role of CDHA President just four years after obtaining her dental hygiene degree. From there she continued to serve the DDHA as a Lecturer, Council on Research Member, and a CDHA Trustee. Beginning in 1987, Joanne served as a committed member of the Journal of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (JDH) Editorial Review Board for 21 years. She has been a Delegate for Connecticut and her work has been published in ADHA’s Access. Joanne served on the National Dental Hygiene Test Construction Committee and currently acts as the Council on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Dental Hygiene Site Visitor, both for the ADA.

Her career in education began in 1977 at the Fones School of Dental Hygiene. There she rose from Part-Time Instructor to become the Director of the program. She then served as Director of Dental Hygiene at Collin College, where she initiated a new CODA accredited program with curriculum development. She currently resides as a Professor in that program. “Through her passion, caring and understanding of her career and students, she has created an exceptional quality of registered dental hygienists in our community.” Her extensive teaching achievements coincided with her work in private practice for 36 years.

Joanne’s commitment to education has assisted 1,300 students enter the dental hygiene profession. Her involvement in research and publication has aided in the advancement of the field and ensured the distribution of those efforts. The establishment of Greater Collin County Dental Hygienists’ Society “filled a void in the professional life of dental hygienists” and now “provides continuing education courses, keeps the attendees informed of legislative activities” and “conducts fundraising activities for HY-PAC and IOH.” Her dedication has served dental hygienist associations at all levels which makes Joanne an exemplary member of this profession.
